PUNE: SHASTRINAGAR

Shastrinagar Community, Pune (1979 – )

The Mega-City of Pune (Maharashtra State) has been declared recently as the most liveable city in India. It is no wonder considering the beauty of Nature, richness in cultural heritage, historical centers for religious and all educational studies, pilgrimage sites, hill stations, flora and fauna for nature lovers, and favorable climate throughout the year.

Pune has a rich history and culture and the presence of numerous forts, palaces, and other historical monuments, shopping stoppages, etc., certainly proves this fact.

The presence of Assumption in this favorable city has its own reasons. Pune is a center for many religious congregations because of study purposes. The community is only a walking distance from Jnana Deepa Vidyapeeth, the Pontifical Athenaeum where our junior sisters attended two years of theological studies. Shastrinagar community is part of the Diocese of Pune. It is situated on the Nagar Road and is well connected to educational institutions both secular and ecclesiastical. In October 1979 the house in Shastrinagar was purchased. This house has served as both the junior and the Provincial House of the Assumption Sisters till now.

Since this convent is situated in the heart of the city, proximity to Airport, railway station, professional colleges, medical centers, and other facilities are easily accessible.  As a provincial house, sisters often come here for special medical reasons. This house witnessed Assumption Sister’s meetings, sessions, classes, and undertakings and has been blessed by the visits of several significant individuals of the Assumption Congregation as well as Church authorities both national and international who have played a very important role in the life of the Province and through the Province, the Congregation. The warm hospitality and affectionate farewells have been one of the distinguishing marks of this community. It is the home of young and old alike. Thus, it is an inter-generational, inter-cultural community of sisters living in love and service!

His Lordship Valerian D’Souza (Emeritus Bishop of Pune, 1977-2009) and His Lordship Thomas Dabre, Bishop of Pune (2009 – ) have always appreciated their service and presence in this Diocese. The Province is indebted to this community for their dedicated service to the various needs of the Province and its mission.
