CALICUT

Calicut Community, Malaparamba (1977 – )

The Calicut community situated in Malaparamba, in the Diocese of Calicut was established in 1977. Malaparamba is eight kilometers away from the city of Calicut which is in the north of Kerala. The community stayed in a rented house in Malaparamba for a few months. Later we built a simple house which was blessed in October 1978 by Bishop Aldo Maria Patroni who welcomed us to his diocese. It was the novitiate community till 1985. From the very beginning onwards, along with the formation, the community was very much involved in the socio pastoral and educational activities.

In 1985 the novitiate was shifted to Pune while the postulants and candidates remained in Calicut. In December 1985 the candidates and the postulants were taken to Vittalwadi in Pune.

Marie Eugenie Centre for Human Development was started on March 10th, 1998. It was started as a significant action of the Indian province on the occasion of the Centenary celebration of St. Marie Eugenie. (1898 – 1998) As counseling was a felt need of the people, a counseling center was started in 1998.

The Calicut house which was built in 1977 was in urgent need of renovation. The old house was demolished in 2010 and the foundation stone for the new convent was laid by His Grace Joseph Kalathiparampil, the Bishop of Calicut in 2010. The blessing of the convent in Calicut took place on 3rd October 2012. The new facilities of the house now enabled us to offer accommodations to a few working women who are in need of a hostel.

In 2012 a playschool was started in the premises of the Calicut community. This project facilitated the sisters to have regular contact with the neighborhood. Later on, it was found out that the playschool is no more a need of the locality and we closed it in 2018. The pastoral ministry is one of the main apostolates of the community along with social work.

The community has a steady group of Assumption together from 2002 onwards and an ONCO care unit was begun. In 2018 with the permission of the General Council a “Godown” (storage house) was built with the hope of having a definite income both for the community and the province
